SMSC stands for spiritual, moral, social and cultural development; this equips our children with the skills and knowledge to be thoughtful and caring and is demonstrated by their positive attitudes towards all members of the school community.

 Spiritual development

• The school’s inclusive ethos and values underpin everything that we do. Respect and acceptance of others’ values, differences and beliefs are central to this.

• Our PSHE curriculum (supported by JIGSAW) teaches children to understand their emotions and celebrate difference

Moral Development

• Our school rules underpin all that we do in school; we have good links with the local PCSO who delivers regular assemblies to the children around issues relevant to the community e.g. anti-social behaviour, hate crime, online safety

• Our school values of respect, honesty and acceptance are a focus for the whole school across a half term. During this time, the children reflect on these values and how they are evidenced both in school and in their wider lives.

Social Development

• Our school rules emphasise the importance of working well together; relationships between staff and pupils and between pupils and their peers are very good – staff model positive social interaction and actively teach it through the JIGSAW programme

  • Our PE curriculum (REAL PE) strongly promotes resilience, good cooperation and interpersonal skills.

Cultural Development

• Our carefully planned curriculum helps children understand their own and other cultures including cultural influences that have shaped the world we live in today. Similarities and differences between cultures are explored

• The British democratic process is modelled regularly. School councillors are elected annually through a rigorous process and survey and ballots support important decisions within the school community. A visit from the local MP was very well received by our Year 6 children in the Spring term.
